Editorial policy
We write only what we can support. Where we cannot support a statement, we leave it out.
Sources
- Product information (weight, fibre, surface, optical brightener content) comes from the manufacturers’ product pages and technical data sheets. If a manufacturer does not publish a figure, we do not give it.
- Preservation advice is based on publications of the Library of Congress and the Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) and on ISO standards (such as ISO 18902 and ISO 18916).
- Technical basics (converting pixels to centimetres, ISO 216 paper sizes, how inkjet printing works) are generally known facts; we check these too, but do not cite a source for every one.
Sources are listed under every article. Links to manufacturers are for information, not affiliate links.
The checked date
Every article shows in its side column the date on which we last checked the information. Product ranges change; if you are reading an article long after that date, check the details with the manufacturer.
Facts, conventions and ratings
- Facts are given with a source.
- Conventions and rules of thumb (hanging height, mount width, viewing distance) are expressly labelled as conventions, not standards.
- Editorial ratings (the scores in Paper Lab) are labelled as editorial ratings, and the method behind them is described in the Methodology.
What we do not do
We do not test papers in a laboratory, we do not measure colour permanence, and we do not review products. The articles are not a professional conservation consultation; for rare or damaged originals, we recommend consulting a conservator.
Articles are credited to OFOTO; we do not give invented names or titles.
Independence
OFOTO carries no advertising or affiliate links and has no business relationship with manufacturers or retailers. Should that ever change, we will say so next to the content concerned.
Corrections
We correct mistakes and record significant corrections. The procedure is on the Corrections page.
Responsibility
The content is prepared by OFOTO, which is responsible for it.
The English version
The English pages carry the same facts and sources as the Slovak originals. Where a source is not in English, we say so next to it; where a Slovak term is what you will meet in practice, we give it in brackets.
